Road Safety Event in the Solstice Arts Centre
Tuesday the 19th January 2016 We were invited to attend an event organised for Transition Year students in the North-East of Meath in the Solstice from Brain Injury Ireland (BRI), the event was organised to raise awareness about dangerous driving and the results of dangerous driving such as death and brain injury. Some of the people who spoke at the event included a local member of An Garda Siochana, a local fireman, an A&E nurse in Drogheda, some victims of brain injuries as a result of a road accident and the families of the victims. Each spoke about the effects of a road traffic accident and how they deal with it. The event showed videos and re-enactments of accidents and the repercussions of it. by Elaine Hubble On Thursday the 21st of February, a debate took place in St Patrick’s Classical School, Navan. This was the second debate of the year in which the three schools -Mercy, Loreto and Pats- all took part.
Three Mercy girls, three Loreto girls and four Pats boys made up two teams. These teams were debating the motion “The leaders of 1916 would be happy with Ireland in 2016.” The proposition was made up of Eleanor Moloney (Mercy), Luke Moran and James McCabe (Pats) and Emily Muldoon and Arianna Owens (Loreto). The opposition consisted of Muireann Corkery and Hannah Cooke (Mercy), Tom Phillips and Cian Hoey (Pats) and Laura Barrett (Loreto). The debate was extremely interesting, with both teams making very strong and well-reasoned arguments. However, in the end, the proposition were the winners. This debate was an excellent opportunity for the Transition Year students of all three schools to get to know each other. by Eleanor Moloney We went to the National Craft and Design Fair in the RDS along with the second year students. When we arrived I was amazed at the amount of stalls set up. The main hall had big rooms attached to it, which contained more stalls. The majority of the rooms had crafts in them but one of the rooms was full of food stalls. The food stalls gave out lots of samples which we all enjoyed, I’d say that we ate most of the samples. They also sold beautiful pictures, pieces of art, candles and lots more. It is a great place to find Christmas and birthday presents. On the way home we stopped at McDonald’s to get something to eat. We all enjoyed the day immensely.
